Darknet for Beginners

The darknet is a set of overlay networks on top of the internet (Tor, I2P) where addresses are concealed by cryptography. It is not a "black internet" but a privacy tool: journalists and activists use it — and yes, so do markets such as Torzon.

1. How Tor Works

Traffic passes through 3 relays: entry → middle → exit (or a rendezvous point for onion services). No single hop knows both who you are and where you are going at the same time. A v3 onion address is itself the service's public key: xxxx...onion cannot be forged without the private key.

2. What Is I2P?

A decentralized network with no exit nodes to the clearnet. It is slower but more resistant to blocking. Markets prefer Tor because of its audience and the out-of-the-box Tor Browser.

3. How a Marketplace Works

Catalogue + wallets + escrow + disputes + ratings. All communication goes through internal mail plus PGP. Money means BTC/XMR; fiat only via exchangers outside the platform.

Tor itself is legal almost everywhere. What is illegal is trade in prohibited goods. Beginner risks: phishing, deanonymization through behaviour (the same nickname on the clearnet), and malware disguised as "Tor Pro". Treat it with our OpSec guide.

Where to start: 1) Tor Browser from torproject.org → 2) Safest security level → 3) read the wiki → 4) PGP → 5) only then visit an onion.
